Family Bakery

An interior "specialty food shop". This was an assignment I had about six weeks to work on with a limited polycount. I had so much fun doing this and all the little details when painting. Original concept by me and all textures painted in photoshop.
This was also featured in the Academy of Art University Annual 2023 Spring show.
I started this project by writing a narrative. I needed a story and so what I came up with involved a family from a fantasy world who has been baking from their home for generations. If you'd like to know more about the story I will include a link to my breakdown.

After coming up with a backstory for my scene I looked for a ton of references and ideas on what I wanted it to look like. I usually use this time to explore and research the specific environment I’m trying to portray, which was a cozy bakery vibe.

Once I gathered all the references that was enough to start, I began to sketch quick rough ideas. I didn’t spend too much time here because I was on a short time frame. I mostly used the sketches as a guide anyway.

I sketched a few of the key objects that I wanted in the scene as well. Some objects I ended up not including in the final environment, like the chair; which I felt made the space too cramped, so the end result was a small wooden chair and stool instead.

After finishing the sketches, I moved on to block out in Maya. Blocking out in Maya is when I really started to lockdown on the layout and composition. I moved the layout around, rotated objects to break up the flow and create pockets of interest.

I did some texturing here for the walls and floor because I wanted to get a feel of color scheme. Based on my narrative there would be a lot of neutral colors like wood but it's also a family home so I wanted to add personality with bursts of color.

I displayed this originally in Marmoset before moving it to Unreal, so I played with lighting here while also continuing to model everything. There were a lot of assets to work on!

Everything was hand-painted in Photoshop. Primarily all textures were done with Albedo however there are a few objects with slight roughness, metallic, and emissive maps such as the boiler and burning ashes which were also done in Photoshop.

I displayed all the assets next to each other to show just how many unique props were done in the six week time frame; which included everything from concept to finished textured assets in a staged and lighted scene.

The Stargazy Pie was a huge part of my narrative.
